Domain Strategy for Pre-Seed Startups

5 min read

Pre-seed founders often over-invest in domain perfection before product-market fit exists. The right move at this stage is "good enough and cheap": secure a clear, professional-sounding domain without overspending on a premium name you might rebrand away from in a year.

If your ideal .com is unavailable or expensive, .io, .ai, and .co are broadly accepted by investors and early users, especially in software and AI categories. Save the premium .com budget for after you've validated the business.

Register the matching handles on your key social platforms at the same time you buy the domain — consistency across channels matters more early on than any single platform's reach.

Avoid names that are hard to spell over the phone or that require explaining the spelling in every conversation. At the pre-seed stage, every unnecessary friction point costs you word-of-mouth growth you can't afford to lose.

Budget for renewal, not just registration. A $12 domain becomes a real annual line item once you're tracking a dozen burn-rate categories — keep your domain footprint tight and intentional rather than registering every variant "just in case".
